This auction is for what we believe to be a very rare antique miniature mechanical steam or water powered industrial textile power loom patent model or salesman sample. We do not see any manufacturer’s marks on the loom and despite our best efforts were unable to determine who made it or where it was made. We are also uncertain as to how old the loom is and are guessing that it might date back to the mid to late 1800s. The loom model is very intricate and highly detailed. If you happen to have the expertise to determine its age and origin by studying its features we would gladly welcome any leads or information. We believe that the loom may be missing some components. From what we could gather it might be missing the heddles and a flying shuttle, and of course if it were possible to make this an operable machine you would need to connect it to a power source—perhaps a perfect fit for your working antique steam engine model. We are unsure as to what else may or may not be missing and do not know what specific type of loom this is.
As noted, we do not know if the loom is functional as we did not test it due to it being incomplete. We did however manually test a few components. We pulled back the wooden-handled lever which engaged the power source pulley against the main operating wheel. This allowed us to manually spin the pulley which in turn moved several of the components throughout the loom. Some of the gears and other components remained stationary when the pulley was spun. We are unsure as to why these other components did not engage when the pulley was spun. The loom has two rollers that are removable. One of the rollers has an attached piece of cloth mounted on it. The top roller appears to be made of wood and has metal pins on its ends that simply sit in the grooves on the loom’s frame. The roller with the cloth attached to it appears to have both wood and metal components. The loom is comprised of several different materials such as wood, leather, and steel and/or iron. The loom also has numerous parts such as springs, gears, nuts, bolts, cotter pins, rollers, rope-type thread, and more. We do not know what all of the names are for the components.
The loom measures roughly 12“ x 7 1/2“ x 7 3/4“ at its furthest points and weighs roughly 4 lbs 1 oz. The loom appears to have most of its original green paint still intact. The loom has aging, scratches, wear, fading, discoloration, rust, and dirty and/or stained areas (see pictures). The loom appears to be free of any breaks, cracks, or repairs. This very rare antique miniature mechanical steam or water powered industrial textile power loom patent model or salesman sample is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
